Planning a School Trip to a Farm in Al Ain: A Guide for Teachers

A farm trip turns lessons about food, water and living things into something students can see, touch and remember. This guide covers what students can do at Al Ain Aquaponic Farm, how to link the visit to your lessons, group pricing and a simple checklist.

What students experience

Al Ain Aquaponic Farm is a working farm in the Umm Ghafa area of Al Ain, founded in 2017. The School Day Trip is built around hands-on activities, and you choose which ones your group takes part in.

  • Aquaponics up close: students see how fish and plants share one recirculating water system, with fish waste feeding the plants and the plants cleaning the water.
  • Animal feeding: the farm is home to goats, sheep, ostriches and hens.
  • Planting experience: a hands-on planting activity designed for children and adults.
  • Guided fishing: a supervised fishing session.

Linking the visit to your lessons

A little preparation helps students get much more out of the day. Here are some ideas you can adapt to your year group.

SubjectIdeas for the farm visit
ScienceLife cycles, what plants need to grow, food chains, and how bacteria turn fish waste into plant food in an aquaponic system
Geography and sustainabilityFarming in a dry climate, saving water, and where the food we eat in the UAE comes from
MathsCounting and estimating, measuring plants, and simple data collection during the visit
Health and nutritionFresh produce, honey and fish, and how food travels from the farm to the table

Before the trip, students can read What Is Aquaponics? How Fish and Plants Grow Together, which explains the cycle in simple steps.
